What is Parole?

Parole is the conditional release of an inmate from incarceration to continue serving the balance of his court-ordered maximum sentence under structured supervision within the community. According to another definition, provided by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, parole from a state sentence is, “a matter of grace and mercy that is shown to an offender who has demonstrated to the Parole Board’s satisfaction the offender’s future ability to function as a law-abiding member of society upon release before the expiration of the offender’s maximum sentence.”
